Making Great Baby Food - Five Top Tips

Are you considering making your own baby food? Great choice! Cooking for a baby is not hard if you follow a few simple guidelines.

Here's what you should do:

Plan it

Being a new parent - probably a mom - you are not likely to have huge amounts of time. So careful planning of the baby food cooking will make everything so much easier. Get a few recipes that seem tasty, healthy and easy to follow and go get the ingredients. Also remember to only include ingredients that are appropriate for your baby's age.

If it is the first time you are to cook according to a particular recipe, don't plan to make 20 servings. There is a risk that your baby simply won't like the dish! Plan for four to five servings or so, so that you can offer the dish a few times and see if your baby accepts the taste. Babies often need a little bit of time to get used to new tastes and textures.

If you have a picky baby, experiment with mixing a lot of something he or she really likes with a bit of some other taste.

Cook it

Now pick a time when your baby is likely to stay asleep for a while or is usually content at least. Or make sure you have someone else take care of your baby if you are in the middle of the cooking.

Now get going with your cooking. Follow whatever recipes you have chosen or simply follow your inspiration. Remember to not add salt or sugar and cook rather than fry the ingredients. Steam cooking is great for keeping the nutritious substances in the food. Or cook in as little water as possible.

When mashing or straining the food (depending on your baby's age and preferences), remember that you can always add some boiled water, formula or breast milk to the mixture if it becomes too thick. Adding some of the water that you cooked the ingredients in will add a little bit of more taste.

Taste it

Don't forget to taste the food! If you like the taste, chances are much higher that your baby will too. Babies are small and inexperienced with solid foods, but they are still humans, remember... Dried dill is an herb that many babies like, so that is one herb you can try seasoning the food with.

If your baby is awake and content, why not let him or her taste a little bit too? Just don't burn your baby!

Freeze it

After you're done, don't just put the food in a jar in the fridge unless you plan to use it all within a day or two. Get an ice cube jar for the purpose and freeze the food in baby servings. Then you can easily pop a cube or two and serve it to you child later on.

Waste it

Never risk your baby's health by serving food that can be too old. Babies' stomachs are sensitive. Anything that seems suspicious, smells weird or has been stored in the fridge for more than 48 hours should go.

Good luck with your cooking!

Create Happy Moments Each Morning

How a young child (1-3 years old) wakes up in the morning will determine his/her mood during most of the daytime. A young child who starts the day in a happy mood, will most likely remain a happy child. On the contrary, a child who wakes up with lots of whimpers will continue whining until someone does various extra efforts to cheer him/her up. Some children will even keep on sitting on his/her parent's lap and being miserable for at least the first half of the day.

The parents play an important role in creating such a happy atmosphere at the time a child wake up in the morning.

A healthy child will love waking up to:

1. A happy greeting
Small children are very dependent on their parent. As soon as they are awake, they will look for their parents or call their parents loudly to come immediately. I advice parents not to ignore them, but to come and greet them cheerfully with a hello, a kiss, a hug and perhaps also a song.

2. A happy face
The happiness shown on the parents' face while talking to children is something that the children will always remember. It is infectious too. Happy parents will create happy children.

If a child keeps on being sad and whimpering in the morning, what could be the problem? Some explanations are:

The child is still very sleepy.
1. S/he was probably up till late the night before. If this is the case, I advise parents to get the child back to sleep and try to get the child follow the normal sleeping pattern step by step.

2. The child has an unfulfilled wish
If a child whines and asks for something continually, I can say that this case is a combination of another improper bed time scheduling plus a lack of communication between parents and the child.

Besides introducing the child to a proper bed time schedule over again, I advise parents to build a close communication with the child. Parents may also want to accompany the child for some minutes on the bed each night to read to him/her as well as talk about the child's plan for tomorrow. Provide the child with some interesting ideas to do tomorrow. On the next morning, the child will wake up happily knowing that something interesting is going to happen. Perhaps the child will still be a bit fussy over his/her unfulfilled wish, but with parents' guide through good communication this problem can soon be solved. A healthy child who has enough sleep and good communication with parents will less likely develop a tantrum.

3. The child is not feeling very well. The child may appear inactive, soundless and eat less. Symptons of an ilness are sometimes not obvious and parents will think that the child is still very sleepy. It happens many times to small children. I think the way that a child refuses every food offered to him/her is already a sign for parents to be curious and take precautious protection towards the child's physical condition.

Don't Let A New Baby Keep You Awake

Sleepless nights when the baby arrived!" - In traditional circles it is expected that the arrival of a newborn proclaims the horrors of yet another "syndrome.

Another myth propagated by the medical fraternity - not the healthy maternity.

I can say unequivocally that a natural lifestyle produces perfect rest for both mother and baby - if, the following simple pattern is established.

• The baby is put on a feeding schedule set up by the parents (who are supposedly in charge of the situation)

• The baby is not "demand fed" The baby is taught the natural feeding cycle based on the digestive cycle of the organism - (read as: circadian rhythms)

• The mother does not get up to feed, change, or soothe the baby during the night.

• The father does that - so that the mother gets adequate rest to ensure that her milk is of the best quality.

• The baby does not sleep with the parents, either in the bed or even the same room. An infant can smell a lactating breast at 50 paces.

• Keep the baby on the breast as long as is possible - up to 2-3 years is natural.

• Do not feed the baby chemical formula or adult foods.

As a result:

• The baby does not gain excessive weight and develop colic, catarrh, constipation etc.

• There is harmony throughout the household and the baby is a joy - within itself and the
synergy of the family routine.

How do I know this? - Practice, practice and more practice; based on countless experiences over the past 25 years.

All the best in rest,

Kevin

How to Shop For Baby Clothes

I think that everyone at one point in their life heard their parents say to them "You didn't come with an instruction manual! I am doing the best I can!". At the time we just expected our parents to know how to be parents because we didn't know any better. Now that the tables have turned, however, we understand what they meant.

My hope is to maybe offer a little bit of an instruction manual on how to be a parent to a new born. Let's start it off with how to shop for baby clothing.

Sex

No! Not the kind of sex that created the baby in the first place. Sex meaning what gender your baby is. I know this sounds redundant but this is good place to start. Know what sex of clothing you are looking for.

Age

Most baby clothing is separated into age groups. For example, one tag might say between 3-6 months and another tag might say 18 months. Sizing like this is standard practice in the baby clothing industry so you should not have a hard time identifying the correct size.

Weather

Babies are very sensitive to weather conditions. Therefore it is imperative that you have clothing for all weather conditions. Try to break this down into summer, winter, and in between. This is your best bet.

Expect a Mess

When shopping for baby clothes, we as parents have a tendency to want our babies to have the best wardrobe on the block. This is great; however, keep in mind that we are dealing with babies. They are messy. They soil themselves, they spit up food, they throw up and much, much more. So, what I suggest is to buy them nice clothing but don't spend a ton of money on 1 item just because of the designer name on the tag.

Remember That Babies Grow

This is probably the most important one to remember. Babies grow at a fairly rapid rate so the closet that you fill today will have to refilled in 3 months with new garments. What does thi mean to you? STAY WITHIN YOUR MEANS! Please keep this in mind. Spend wisely.

So, there you have it! Simple enough, right?

And that is it for my first "How To" in the instruction manual for raising a baby.
